Type 1 Diabetes - The Causes

Like the common cold, doctors are uncertain how type 1 diabetes is caused, but many think 90% of cases are due to the same viruses that cause the common cold, and several viruses have been identified as those possibly responsible. Therefore, for someone who has certain factors in their chromosomes, type 1 diabetes can be contracted when someone literally sneezes on them!

For the 10% of cases not due to these viruses, it has been shown that destruction of the beta cells by an autoimmune disease is responsible.

So what are the details here?

Type 1 diabetes is what is called an autoimmune disease. This is where there is a fault in the nervous system causing a reaction. For example, germs that attack the body, for example a cold, are recognised by immune system and attacked, with the result that over a short period, the cold is cured. Unfortunately, if the immune system thinks insulin, the hormone we produce to allow energy in the form of blood glucose to pass in to our cells, is an unwanted intruder, it attacks it and we get diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is more prevalent in people who have other autoimmune diseases.

Also, type 1 diabetes is more prevalent in people who have abnormalities in their DNA. It has been found that certain characteristics in chromosomes are present, which are not present in people who do not have diabetes. It is possible to observe these abnormalities and wait to see if diabetes is later contracted, but simply having these abnormalities does not guarantee you will get diabetes.

Environment plays an important part in determining whether or not type 1 diabetes is contracted. This is tied in with the aforementioned common cold analogy.

It is believed that one or several viruses have the capacity to attack the pancreas, the gland that produces insulin. In turn that virus is then attacked by body’s immune system. Now if the virus contains a substance that occurs naturally in the pancreas, the immune system’s antibodies that fight the virus will then also affect this substance in the pancreas, with the same consequences as if the virus had attacked the pancreas directly.

Research into type 1 diabetes and its causes continues.

False Theories Concerning Diabetes

It is said that every lie contains a grain of truth.

This can be especially true when it comes to diabetes and other chronic diseases. Everyone seems to have an opinion, even if they know nothing about the disease itself. This is unfair and confusing to some. This article will try and expose some of these “truths” and deal with them.

Probably one of the most common ones is that eating a piece of chocolate will kill you. I’ve had it said to me. I wonder, do people like to say these things to depress others or simply annoy them?

Those most impressionable, in other words a diabetic who has only just discovered that they have the disease, are most at risk from absorbing this sort of “advice”, and being pretty miserable as a consequence. Small doses of chocolate is fine and may even be necessary to recover from a hypoglycaemic event.

Sure, you want to keep blood sugars under control, but close monitoring will not just save you from some of the health consequences later in life, it will also give you an indication of when you can safely eat some sugary food.

It is also important not to be sidetracked by advertisements, particularly on the internet, of products that are secret “miracle cures”. These are generally “products” pushed by unscrupulous affiliate marketers who seek to make a quick buck from other people’s vulnerability.

Given the potential long term health complications as a result of being a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, it can be very tempting to turn to the various “miracle cures” available through the anonymity of the internet these days. However, these very same potential health complications should be scary enough for you not to want to take a gamble. Diabetes has no cure - fact. Take only recognised medication.

Probably the best myth is the one that says “now your having to take insulin, you’re going to die soon.”

This again is utter rubbish. If the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether, injecting insulin is simply giving your body what the pancreas can no longer provide.

Not only that, but as more oral medications are developed in response to research, injecting insulin has become a thing of the past for some diabetics.

It is true that people who take insulin need to monitor their blood sugar levels very closely and live the lifestyle of a type 1 diabetic, but there is no reason to live a long life.

Type 2 Diabetics - Beware Of Crooks

I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic in 2008.

I want to make something clear from the start.

I greatly admire so called “affiliate marketers”, and this is not intended to make detrimantal comments about those who are ethical in their approach.

Secondly, I do a small amount of affiliate marketing myself, but I don’t promote anything to do with what I write about most - diabetes. Not a product, not an eBook, nothing.

Type 2 diabetes is where a person’s body becomes resistant to the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas. Some people control it by adjusting their diet, others by diet and medication, and others by diet, medication and injections of insulin.

What I get treally upset about, is that there are some people out there who see diabetics as an easy target to make money. This often occurs on line in the field of affiliate marketing. In countries where diabetic drugs are expensive, the temptation of the latest secret “wonder product” that will “cure diabetes” and save money is often very persuasive.

Such people makes claims that border on the libellous. I read a sales page lately that claimed this wonder drug was “100% natural” (surprise, surprise), and that the medical world had covered it up. They had done this because they make money out of diabetics by charging for drugs etc.

So the temptation is to buy this product, because it will save you a fortune on doctor’s bills and medication.

It was a great sales page, which didn’t encourage the obvious questions like “is it safe?” or “how has it been tested?” or even “what if it doesn’t work?”.

The simple truth is that there is no cure for diabetes, it’s that simple.

The problem is that the disease can be managed very well these days. But the monitoring equipment and ongoing drugs can be expensive, depending on the county you are in.

Renal failure and amputations, not to mention blindness are the consequences of untreated diabetes. Why risk your health on the promise of someone trying to make a quick buck?

Some of the hyperbole is amazing on some of these sales pages, “I shed tears of joy when my wife was cured”; beware!

One of the things the writer has enjoyed since having diabetes, is learning to play the guitar. Toby has bought a couple of guitars, one of which is an Ovation, specially shaped to fir the abdomen, which makes it more comfortable for him to play.
